If you are wondering the often asked, “What is the next big thing in Social Media?” then today we may have the answer as one of the Co-Founder Chris Hughes would be starting up a new platform to promote charitable efforts. The name of the company is Jumo. The company is a non profitable organization that is trying to help people find their way in the world.

Jumo news by salar golestanianSo how does this work? When you sign up you will be asked to connect your Facebook account then it asks you to select and rate different issues such as human rights, education and health when you are rating them it is done on your level of interest. Once you are all signed up, Jumo uses your interests and suggests a variety of charities for you to follow. Naturally the list had been approved previously by Jumo.

Something I am not so sure is why it uses one's Facebook account, it’s not like you can see what charities your friends are following. Or I know of many that have switched their FaceBook off after the security changes to FaceBook earlier in the year. There is a distinct lack of social networking with this site, although I guess that isn’t their aim.

A little bit about Hughes where he left FaceBook in 2007 and became the Obama Campaign's director of online organizing. Chris Hughes hopes his new venture will succeed where others have failed: in getting Internet users to shell out hard cash for causes. Hughes, 27, built campaign website my.barackobama.com into a financial success that raised more than 2 million donations of less than $200 and helped coordinate more than 70,000 Obama-themed events during the 2008 election cycle.

Jumo was designed to let users find, follow and support the causes important to them, and with 3,500 organizations on board at launch, would-be philanthropists should be able to find and follow something of interest upon joining.

Less than 1% of all charitable donations come from social media, harnessing social media’s ability to bring together individuals who previously have indicated they want to receive information about a cause or a politician or even change of government can be envisaged.

Recently Movember movement has gained big popularity where even I have also joined the cause. The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia.  The plan was simple – to bring the moustache back as a bit of a joke and do something for men’s health. No money was raised in 2003, but the guys behind the Mo realized the potential a moustache had in generating conversations about men’s health.  Inspired by the women around them and all they had done for breast cancer, the Mo Bros set themselves on a course to create a global men’s health movement.

Now with 627,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas who have supported our cause since 2003.  Movember has proved that through social media one can orchestrate a campaign to benefit a charity like Prostate cancer.

Jumo's success will remain to be seen. But the close connection with FaceBook will help its platform to jump start into people' heart and mind quickly.
