Although we have number of Sci-fi movies showing right now, But the heart-tugging drama The Help has risen one place to top the US and Canada box office after taking an estimated $20.5m (£12.4m) over the weekend. The adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's 2009 novel tells of the relationship between white women and their black housekeepers in 1960s Mississippi.
But ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ took in another $16.3 million behind ‘The Help’s $20.4 million. Four new films debuted this past weekend and all failed to open within expectations. Director Robert Rodriquez’ poorly reviewed ‘Spy Kids: All the Time in the World’ opened with just $12 million. This was the lowest opening yet for the kid franchise. The big budget reboot of ‘Conan the Barbarian’ just barely beat the almost 30 year-old openings of 1982′s ‘Conan the Barbarian’ ($9.6m) and 1984′s ‘Conan the Destroyer’ ($6.9m).
‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2′ took in another $4.4 million domestically, bringing it’s worldwide box office to be about equal to the GDP of many small countries approaching 400 million USD. It has therefore, has done better than the Transformer the dark of moon to-date even though Transformer had more time in the theatres. ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ continues its slow movement towards $100 million taking in another $4.1 million domestically.
I can see that the public appetites for blood are not there anymore. Conan the Barbarian Trailer shows the bloody first scene and to be honest puts a lot of people right off going to see the movie. I probably will have no appetite to see such vulgar disregard for human life and therefore will not watch it in a year when it comes to movie channel for free.
