Genre films continued to dominate the top 10 box office spots again this weekend. While the weekend was yet again down 33% from last year (same weekend when Clash of the Titans debuted to $61.2 million), Universal managed to rule the weekend with the Easter themed live action hybrid, Hop.

Hop debuted to $38.1 million, making it the highest non-holiday opening for 2011, beating Rango‘s debut of $38 million. ‘Moon’ director Duncan Jones’ ‘Source Code’ did a respectable $15 million for the weekend to take second place to animated film ‘Hop’ crushing the competition by doing a surprising $38 million.

The third newest film of the week, Insidious did $13.4 million over the weekend, which was good enough for 3rd. The film was produced for only $1 million, so it has already made a profit back. The marketing for the horror film said it was from the makers of Paranormal Activity and Saw, so that obviously worked. The studio behind Insidious is FilmDistrict (Insidious is actually their first movie), so this is the studio to watch for this year.

In its’ third weekend, action thriller ‘Limitless’ dropped to fifth with another strong showing for $9.4 million and bringing its domestic US total to $55.6 million. Last week’s number two film, Zack Snyder’s ‘Sucker Punch’, dropped to seventh this weekend as the bad reviews films incoherent plot taking hold.

Sci-fi comedy ‘Paul’ fell to ninth taking in $4.3 million, while alien invasion film ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ took tenth place with $3.5 million.

  1. ‘Hop’    $38.1 Total Gross at $38.1
