Barry, of Yorkshire, England, is probably best known for his composition of the James Bond Theme, but his five Academy Awards came for his compositions for 'Born Free,' 'The Lion of Winter,' 'Out of Africa,' and 'Dances with Wolves,' which also earned him a Grammy.

Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1998, Barry successfully composed the 'James Bond Theme' for 1962's 'Dr. No' movie and went on to score 11 of the next 14 James Bond movies, including 'Goldfiner,' 'Diamonds are Forever,' and 'You Only Live Twice.'

Barry, whose father ran number of cinemas in York United Kingdom, and whose mother was a pianist, learned to play the trumped and piano at an early age, and began a rock band before beginning his film score career. Later the action of Agent 007 on Her Majesty's Secret Service would never have been so thrilling if it wasn't for that sultry, signature theme music.

Sadly, Reuters reports composer John Barry, the man behind the sexy orchestral arrangements that charged up many adventures with James Bond, passed away. EON Productions, the company behind James Bond released a statement saying, "It is with great sadness that the family of composer John Barry announce his passing on January 30 in New York." Though no official cause of death was provided, apparently the legendary music man suffered a fatal heart attack.

In addition to his extensive work on the James Bond franchise, Barry also received praise and awards for scoring films like Born Free, Out of Africa and Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves. Other impressive work includes his work on Midnight Cowboy, Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club and Richard Attenborough's Chaplin. Unfortunately, Barry hadn't composed anything since 2001, but his music and legacy will live on in film.

Following are the 12 Bond movies he was involved in. He scored 11 and arranged the music for 'Dr. No' in 1962:

As composer:
  • The Living Daylights (1987)
  • A View to a Kill (1985)
  • Octopussy (1983)
  • Moonraker (1979)
  • The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)
  • Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
  • On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
  • You Only Live Twice (1967)
  • Thunderball (1965)
  • Goldfinger (1964)
  • From Russia With Love (1963)

 As musical arranger:
  • Dr. No (1962)
