Nintendo 3DS hand-held game machine which is expected to release in February in Japan, should be avoided by children less than six years old as there are health risks involved, or they need to view them in 2D mode. Japanese firm also warns players of all ages to take a break at least every 30 minutes to avoid eye fatigue.

After the long-awaited launch of Nintendo's 3D version of its best-selling DS games console has been overshadowed by a health warning. The Japanese computer giant has said children under the age of six should not use the device in 3D mode as it may harm their eyesight. The Nintendo 3DS represents a major breakthrough as it will be the first hand-held games console to offer 3D images of both games and films without the need for glasses.

3-D viewing causes quicker eye fatigue than standard screen viewing. It suggests that players of all ages should take a break at least every 30 minutes in order to avoid eye fatigue.

It is thought that eye sight development for children can be hindered by looking at the 3D game for long hours in youngsters. Nintendo is offering to look at 3D images without wearing glasses unlike cinemas and TV screens. Some people see this warning as a precautionary measure to stay away from any kind of litigation. Sony Corp.’s PlayStation3 also displays 3D images and does come with a warning but it does not allow looking at them without using glasses. It creates a dilemma on whether looking at the images without glasses on can cause more danger to eyes or the other way round. Sony said that the warning was given because children in the development process can be sensitive but no serious medical condition has been seen.

It is also rumoured that Apple is looking at the 3D Technology for their future versions of iPad and iPhone, This could mean that all manufacturers thinking of producing 3D devices, need to carry the warning notices to ensure down time every 30 minutes or so one's eye can relax.
