This is going to sound a little like New Windows 7 Ads - "That was my Idea!" About 3 years ago I had an idea that I can use DotNetNuke in a collaborative approach to allow people to get together based on an idea of a movie and slowly gain traction and find people that can contribute and make the movie. The site is live at www.scifiwood.com Obviously it had a Science Fiction Genre to it. I was planning to use Active Social and DNN combination and at that time,  they were not focussed enough neither was mature like it is today. Therefore, couple of month’s struggling with it and realizing that to move it forward I would probably need to build a completely new module, I got side tracked with other customer focused projects and this came of my radar.

And there it was in a section dedicated to wreckamovie.com and that is when I said “That was my idea!”. Having said that, I was very impressed with Wreckamovie polished and focus approach. My idea with ScifiWood had other complex elements built into the initial concept brief and therefore, the complexities made it a little too ambitious considering the technology, budget and time that I and my team had at our disposal.

If you’ve heard of the movie Star Wreck, then you’re already familiar with Star Wreck Studio’s operating procedure: that takes a community of thousands of online movie-making buffs, and have them collaborate on a feature-length film. Star Wreck, was a 15,000-$20,000 film, is considered to be the most popular internet-created feature film of all time, with over eight million downloads all around the globe. At first the film was distributed free online only, and eventually it was distributed by Universal Pictures as a premium DVD.

Therefore, Wreckamovie is now a collaborative film production platform, very much like our own DotNetNuke Open Source initiative a few years ago that resulted DotNetNuke Community Edition, where like DNN, anybody can come, set up his own film production and find a community to collaborate with, or find interesting film productions and become a collaborator in a worknet. Its aim is to make filmmaking easier, more effective and possible for everyone.

This is what they say about it at Wrekamovie.com
“Star Wreck Studios is a film studio that is specialized in blending the Internet and the film industry together by unleashing the creative potential of Internet communities, and changing the whole chain of filmmaking. Through the launch of its new online service www.wreckamovie.com, the company makes it possible to collaboratively produce professional quality A/V content of all types: from short films to feature films and to all distribution screens – from Internet and mobile to film theatre.

Star Wreck Studios was established in February of 2007 by the creators of the world’s first feature-length collaborative Internet film, Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning which has more than 8 million global downloads. Star Wreck Studios is headquartered at the centre of the global Internet film world in Tampere, Finland.” For WreckaMovie, it all started with Only a full-length science fiction film called Star Wreck phenomenon from Finland to become a phenomenon on the world stage. This niche film with Hollywood quality special effects, subtitles in 30 languages and all made in collaboration with an active passionate community, was released in August of 2005, going against every industry standard and was made with only 15 000 €. With today’s technology, people cooperating across the Internet and now instant global distribution, the crew of 5 and 3000 of their friends across the globe proved the old model of film making and watching is not the only way. The success opens the door for any niche film to get made and then seen by millions.

Based on the experience of that movie, Wreck Studio started developing the web platform that is designed from start to harness the power of Open Source Communities for creating short films, documentaries, music videos, internet flicks, full length features, mobile films and more... See some of the work that recently come out of there like http://www.starwreck.com/

Wreckamovie has now become a social community that has a simple workflow and marketplace that builds communities and online resourcing of expertise and corporate funding. The communities developed in each production project will also create a viral social marketing force that will get films seen through the hundreds of existing online and standard channels.

There are a lot of collaborations going on and I wish that this initiative grows and matures in time. Here is for example one very interesting interview I found at Assembly TV with Renderfarm.fi and BURP that I like to share, This is with the announcement of new integrated functionality between Renderfarm.fi and the communal movie production website Wreckamovie.com
