Google Translate Goes Star Trek; only for earth's popular Languages   Google Translate Goes Star Trek; only for earth's popular Languages

Last Year, Google launched the Translate application for Android devices, able to allow translation of text for over 50 different languages, with the results delivered using the text-to-speech function of the phone. Now Google Translate brings us closer to the dream of a Star Trek-esque Universal Translator.

Trekkers will remember that all the aliens spoke English. Well, not quite: some used a device known as the Universal Translator. This would listen for the speaker's words and translate them on the fly for the listener and vice versa. Naturally a lot of computational power is required for such task.

We all knew it was only a matter of time before real life caught up with Star Trek. Enter Google's latest update for its Translator app which allows for something called "Conversation Mode." While it won't translate intergalactic languages like Klingon just yet, but it does attempt to translate earth like languages such as Spanish in its initial release - a far cry from the 53 languages that the text translation service currently supports.

This is it not perfect, but it is a good start by Google as they are currently the largest company with access to enough technology to make this a reality. You can see in this video showing a prototype of the software (from last year) demonstrates in the videos below that this is really a beta prototype:

It is reported that "A Google spokesperson said the company has launched a new version of Google Translate for Android that includes a “conversation feature” that can translate in something almost like real time."

And that the new Google Translate application can translate between 53 different languages. After choosing one of the 53 languages, a user can speak (or type) a block of text into the application, which will then be translated. The 'Real Time' Conversation Mode is only available for English and Spanish. However, more languages will be added in the near future.
