Professor Brian Cox made astrophysics sexy in Wonders of the Solar System, and now he is back for this three-night live show exploring the stars. From their eyrie in the University of Manchester's Lovell Telescope, Brian gives co-host Dara O Briain (a self-confessed frustrated astronomer) a crash course in astronomy, while gadget-obsessed Jonathan Ross goes back to basics as he learns to navigate the night sky using a pencil and paper.

The BBC programme will featuring some spectacular sights, and Brian's accessible and enthusiastic style, this is a great look at the wonders of the universe without the usual geeky approach taken in the past programmes promoting Astronomy.

Jonathan Ross that is for well known for interviewing stars than gazing at them is joining Stargazing Live line-up. Jonathan is a hugely enthusiast character and he'll be a big advocate. Stargazing Live is about mass participation.

Stargazing Live will be broadcast from the site of one of the world's largest telescopes and aims to get the public looking at the heavens. This show is likely to start a frantic week of public purchasing Telescopes from stores up and down UK.

Here is for example one of the participants The Long Eaton School (A Foundation School for Science and Applied Learning)that will be hosting the event on January 5th from 6pm - 8 pm. And here are some of the activities that will the school will be undertaking:
  • Observing the constellations
  • Planet spotting
  • Checking how much light pollution we have affecting our view of the Night Sky
  • Taking photographs of the night sky
  • Quadrantid Meteor hunting
"We will be using specialist equipment from the school and also borrowing some from the Astronomy Department at Nottingham Trent University.
Professor Brian Cox and Dara O’Briain will be bringing the wonders of the stars live to BBC2 and we have registered our event so we may get a visit from a camera crew!"

The plot is about a trained physicist-turned comedian "Dara O'Briain" as a frustrated astronomer, who has been living with an unopened telescope in his attic for as long as he can remember. During the programme, Brian Cox takes Dara on a crash course of the skies, showing him how to spot and take pictures of celestial marvels.

This programme is likely to prompt me as well as many other families around the country to purchase a decent telescope after learning enough about the subject at the end of the series.

BBC is asking astronomers of all levels to share their best photographs of the night skies online, to be showcased during the live shows. You can also follow the programme on twitter #bbcstargazing
