I have been tracking the development of Chrome OS since it was first announced, mainly because of my love for Open Source Projects. Chrome OS is another open source project, so most of the details have slowly been released since it is hard to keep them secret.

There have however been some major questions, like:-
  1. What hardware is it going to ship with?
  2. What’s the price-point?
  3. Which is my interest as web developer, who will be building the Apps that allows it to compete with traditional operating systems like Windows and Mac OS X?
  4. Who will be running the App Store? Will it be walled garden like Apple App Store?
Currently the OS is not perfect and it is not quite ready for full release as It still has the following work to do:-
  1. Camera drivers (for notebook USB ports)
  2. Finishing Google Cloud Print,
  3. Much more in the list..
Google has chosen today to announce that they are ready to beta test in USA by putting it in the hands of the early adopters in the new pilot programme.

Consumers and developers will be able to apply for this, however, Google isn’t giving it away to just anyone. On its Facebook Fan Page, they ran a promotion a couple days, announcing a sticker for a Chrome laptop, if you did that quiz, you get a notebook. If you go to youtube.com/Google chrome and make a video showing why you’re an ideal candidate for this, you’ll have a chance to snag a notebook. Apparently, everyone in the audience at the big event got one. And if you don’t fall into any of those buckets, you can apply by clicking here.

Here are some of the attractive aspects of the device:-
  1. The CR-48 is supposed to boot in 10 seconds
  2. Includes a webcam
  3. Reasonable 12-inch LCD display
  4. It weighs 3.8 pounds
  5. 8 hours of battery life and an entire week of standby time
  6. All Chrome OS Notebooks to Ship with Cellular Modems
  7. The device has Free Data Access and Google said that it is going to be 100MB free data every month for 2 years.
  8. No contract, Pay only for what you need with plans in USA at less than 10 USD.
  9. There is going to be no activation, overage or cancellation fees, just an easy self-activation process.
