Thor opened in US on 6th May and had a great week at no1 spot with $65m gross. This Action adventure by Paramount Pictures was ahead of Fast Five and Jumping the Broom. Superhero movie Thor also stormed the UK and Ireland box office chart, taking pole position after its first weekend on release.

Rotten Tomatoes give it around 80% rating and that is not bad. They write: "A dazzling blockbuster that tempers its sweeping scope with wit, humor, and human drama, Thor is mighty Marvel entertainment"

The $150 million action film, by Paramount was produced by Disney-owned Marvel Studios, attracted an audience that was 63 percent male. Surprisingly, the PG-13 movie skewed older, with 72 percent of its audience over the age of 25. CinemaScore moviegoers gave "Thor" a "B+" rating, and 3-D showings brought in 60 percent of its gross. IMAX theatres, in particular, accounted for 10 percent of the movie's earnings.

The good showing in UK was probably due to Oscar winners Sir Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman star in the film about Marvel Comics' Norse god of thunder. This is refreshing for this year as previous top earners have been mainly animated adventures mostly for under 15 year olds.

This is a new type of superhero: Thor. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth. .
