'I am Number Four' Film Reviews   'I am Number Four' Film Reviews

I noticed 'I am Number Four' is already out in US and coming to UK on 23/02/11 - So here are some of the reviews that could influence you to see it or wait for DVD/Blue Ray. I pick extracts from Mirror, Guardian and Total Film which with some good reviews from the public makes an average of 4/5.

I am number four i about an extraordinary teen John Smith (Pettyfer) - is a fugitive on the run from ruthless enemies sent to destroy him. Changing his identity, moving from town to town with his guardian Henri (Olyphant), John is always the new kid with no ties to his past. In the small Ohio town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected, life-changing events-his first love (Agron), powerful new abilities and a connection to the others who share his incredible destiny.

Mirror:
"Every few months another film comes along with big hopes of being the next Harry Potter. Stormbreaker. The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Stardust. The Spiderwick Chronicles. And those are just the Ss.

But maybe - just maybe - Universal has cracked the formula with I Am Number Four, an enjoyable fantasy romp that conjures up the same sort of magic that comes from Hogwarts. Not that it's going to win prizes for originality, since it's about a teen (played by a British actor) with magical powers pursued by an evil nemesis.

Tense and exciting, I Am Number Four noses ahead of the competition thanks to plenty of exhilarating effectsheavy set pieces. Barely a moment goes by without something to startle the eye and ear. That said, this tale of a gifted lad facing his destiny occasionally feels like the entire Harry Potter series concertinaed into two hours."

Guardian:
"I Am Number Four, which is already being made into a Steven Spielberg-produced film, looks expensive. The first in a six-book series pseudonymously written by the surprising pair of newcomer Jobie Hughes and memoir-fabulist James Frey, even its proof – a hardcover in a slipcase – is startlingly opulent. It's a bit of a shame, then, that all this money spent in search of the next big teenage crossover smash has gone to a perfectly decent action-adventure that firmly refuses to be anything more.

I Am Number Four is a competent and entertaining thriller, but it has no deeper resonance, a resonance which was key to the runaway success of both the Harry Potter and the Twilight series. Even John's teenager-as-alien allegory doesn't work, because he's handsome and confident, with superpowers and a beautiful girlfriend. Which is what teenage years were like for everyone, weren't they?

I Am Number Four will probably be a hit. The movie will certainly help. But will it sell the millions the publishers are hoping for? I'm not sure, because it makes the possibly fatal mistake – both in the story it tells and the effort it expends in telling it – of not taking being a teenager very seriously. And teenagers, you may be surprised to learn, are likely to notice."

Total Film:
"You can see why Spielberg liked the story: nine infant aliens with extraordinary powers being hunted down on Earth by the evil invaders who destroyed their home planet.

And just as he proved with Disturbia, director DJ Caruso is an incredibly sure hand at old-school adventures. His smartest move in this romantic thriller is assembling an immensely likeable cast – none of them are stars, all of them leave us wanting more.

An enjoyable teen rom-thriller that never swerves off the beaten path but always keeps its footing. Expect a franchise, and career boosts for Pettyfer and Agron."
