Sony has picked up ‘District 9′ director Neill Blomkamp’s big budgeted follow up named ‘Elysium’. It is reported that Sony has set a budget set at $120 million for ‘Elysium’ is a big step from Blomkamp’s $35 million, under-the-radar hit, ‘District 9′. The new film will star Matt Damon (Ocean 11/12/13, ‘Hereafter’, Bourne Identity’), Jodie Foster (‘Contact’, The Brave One’) and Sharlto Copley (‘District 9′, ‘The A-Team’) with Syd Mead (‘Blade Runner’, ‘Alien’, ‘Tron’) as Production Designer.

While the story details are under wraps, rumors put the story 100 years in the future possibly on another planet. Director Neill Blomkamp issued this statement:

"I literally could not be happier.  I have a brilliant relationship with Sony. I loved them during District 9, they 100% get this film and they get me. Elysium is in very good hands."

Pre-production is set to start in April with filming to take place in Vancouver and Mexico City beginning in July. A tentative release date is set for late 2012. ony Pictures has now decided to go it alone on Neill Blomkamp's new scifi pic Elysium for worldwide distribution. So there is no Universal Pictures' involvement, as the studio declined to take part. MRC put the deal together.

The plot of Elysium is a secret at this time, but it will be set 100 years in the future and is expected to contain a social allegory in much the same way that District 9 used alien refugees to comment on apartheid in South Africa, possibly involving a geneticist named Joseph Kulper who creates a virus that kills anyone without an IQ of at least 70 (see video below). Acclaimed set designer Syd Mead (Blade Runner) has been hired to design the look of the future world and tech in the movie.
Blomkamp released a statement expressing just how happy he is that Sony, which also picked up District 9 in a distribution deal, will be handling distribution on Elysium.
