The original Tron was a cutting edge sci-fi adventure when the film took its viewers into a new world, a CGI world. Using a combination of old special effects with new technology created for the film the film didn’t do anywhere near the business that was expected of it. But because of video and later DVD, Tron has developed a much-deserved cult following. With the new movie Disney has spend close to $180 million on the new sequal. The new movie is using the latest technical resources available today, Tron: Legacy is also available in glorious Imax 3D.

Anyone that remembers Disney history in early 1980s, will recall in 1982 that the company was going through tough times with dreadful box office. Yet the company was willing to take a chance and push the envelope with the original. Tron did only OK, but it was the merchandising (namely the arcade game) did better and the video as well as the now out of print 20-year special edition DVD kept the idea alive. While Tron: Legacy’s story may not be amazing, yet the new movie special effects are great and it is likely together with the 3D Imax, make the experience worth every penny.

The recent news that ‘Tron: Legacy’ crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office in 12 days is a good news for this great movie. The $180 million budgeted movie has also grossed about $80 million overseas. Playing in 3,451 theatres in the North America, the movie set an IMAX record with 25% of the domestic gross coming from just 235 IMAX theaters in US. Therefore already the studio is break even and whatever comes from now on should be profit.
