Machinima is filmmaking within a real-time, 3D virtual environment, often using 3D video-game technologies, and one of the most engaging environment to create Machinima is Second life..

Machnima is the convergence of filmmaking, animation and game development, that is using real-world filmmaking techniques applied within an interactive virtual space where characters and events can be either controlled by humans, scripts or artificial intelligence.

By combining the techniques of filmmaking, animation production and the technology of real-time 3D game engines, Machinima makes for a very cost- and time-efficient way to produce films, with a large amount of creative control.

In this year's MachinExpo 2010 took place in the Expo Hub and UWA theater. You can see the Films offline and on demand on the Vimeo channels. And the winner of December Muvizu/Expo Contest was “Close Up” by Rollo

The 2010 Machinima Expo was a break-through year for the festival. Consider that in our first year (2008) the expo had only had 100 people, whereas this year there were well over 1000 people attending the festival via our web portal alone. The film submissions were the highest they’ve ever been and the profile of the Expo was such that there is a much bigger recognition for Machinima festival.

For more background to why Machinima, see some of the Machinima advantages below?

  • The real-time recording of human/scripted performances and events - akin to shooting film; eliminates the post rendering process.
  • The creative flexibility of artistic assets moved over time – akin to animation; allows total control over visual representation of characters, events, etc.
  • The interactive environment can provide a space where characters can interact and real-world physics can be reproduced.
Because Machinima can be shot live or scripted in real-time, it's much faster to produce than traditional CGI animation. A live action director should feel right at home and an animation director will be able to direct without having to rely on key frames. Multiple takes can be made in real-time or just a few takes while the rest is adjusted in post, dependent on the director's style.
