How to Second Life on your iPad or iPhone   How to Second Life on your iPad or iPhone

I am afraid this is a cheat since I have not developed an application to allow you to view SecondLife directly on iPad or iPhone. I am talking about my favourite remote access programme on my iPad the “SplashTop” and how I use it to remote control my Home/Office Windows Home Server or any other pc/laptop at your home and Second Life as if the Tablet is running the app in iOS4.2.

Since I actually agree with the developer, I might as well just state their homepage description of Splashtop Remote.  Which states that it is a must-have for your iPhone and iPad!
  • Watch videos and play music stored on your PC, whether in iTunes™, Windows® Media Player, or any other format.
  • Play games such as Farmville™ or Bloons™ SecondLife and more...
  • Use your regular web browser with Flash as the heavy Flash CPU usage is done on PC.
  • Work on documents, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Fully control your PC/Servers in any way imaginable
  • Attend conference calls that the clients like GoToMeeting is not available for iPad/iPhone
Basically if you have an iPad/iPhone or iPod and plan to do a PowerPoint presentation whilst walking around the stage, then moving your laptop is not practical and therefore, a better way of controlling your presentation is doing it from iPad/iPhone. I have done this couple of times and the audience loved was very impressed since after the presentation most of the questions was about the tools I used to deliver it like I did and no question was asked about the content of the presentation.

However, my interest in SplashTop was more to do with Game Play or watching videos that I have on my Media Server. So when I first thought about using it for Second life, I was very excited. iOS4 devices don’t have enough processors to allow you to navigate in second life. Therefore, currently there is no SL viewer for iOS4.2. There are plenty of Remote Control tools available to control PCs from iOS. But to my knowledge none of the competition has sound. SplashTopRemote can elegantly control your pc as well as letting you hear the sound of your pc. As well as let you use the iPad microphone to input voice back to your pc. It is a perfect candidate for the task.

The requirements for making this so is the following:
  • Windows 7, Vista, XP, or Mac OS X 10.6 (beta)
  • 1 GB of RAM 2 GB is recommended since you will be running SL
  • 1.6 GHz or faster dual-core CPU
  • Splashtop Remote works on:
On your iOS4 device
  • iPad - all versions running iOS 4.1 or 4.2
  • iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS - with iOS 3.2 or later
  • iPod touch – 3rd generation or later with iOS 3.2 or later
  • You also need a Fast Wi-Fi connection for your iPad or iPhone, that is shared by your PC or Laptop.
I am not saying this approach is perfect as SplashTopRemote was not built with SL in mind. So there are some works still required by eitherof SplashTop Remote or SecondLife viewer developers, so to improve on the controls available in SplashRemote to better navigate SL. Or alternatively for SplashTopRemote Developers to identify that a small change in their user controls will allow us to easier use it to run SL.

In the mean time I suggest you try it out, here is a short demo of SecondLife on your iPad/iPhone.  This is what you need to do:-
  1. Install SplashTop Remote on your iPod/iPhone/iPad.
  2. Install SplashTop Remote on your PC/Laptop Running Windows 7.
  3. Install Second Life viewer version 2 on your PC/Laptop

So long they both go through the same Wireless Router then you are in business.
